Psychedelics in the treatment of mental health problems
In recent years, psychedelic-assisted medicine has moved from being an experimental field to becoming the great frontier of contemporary mental health. Following the consolidation of ketamine as an approved medicine with proven results in the treatment of depression, we now stand on the threshold of historic regulation for substances such as MDMA (ecstasy), psilocybin (the active ingredient in so-called “magic mushrooms”) and LSD, which are in Phase III clinical trials for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (MDMA), major and treatment-resistant depression (psilocybin and LSD) and generalised anxiety disorder (LSD). Other psychedelic substances such as DMT and 5-MeO-DMT are likewise at advanced stages (Phase II and IIb). To examine this paradigm shift, we are holding a three-hour event on 20 March at which internationally renowned experts and specialists from Clínica Synaptica in Barcelona and the Universidade de São Paulo in Ribeirão Preto (Brazil) will break down the clinical evidence and the medical future of these compounds in addressing mental health problems.
